WHY INVEST IN YOUTH?
The unemployment rate in South Africa has increased to 32.5% in the last quarter of 2020. Adding to this social dilemma is youth with a highest grade achievement of between 9 – 11 were 40% – 70% more likely to be unemployed. This shows a direct link between unemployment and education. Unemployment is highest for those living in rural areas, or in urban townships/ informal settlements.
Failure to address this challenge will reinforce and worsen racial, income, spatial and gender inequalities. Youth employability is further compromised by a fragmented education system that is difficult to navigate for the country’s poorest youth. It is important to note that 42% of South African youth aged 15 – 24 live in households with no employed adult. Thus, many young people have limited access to information about how to change their situation.
GetOn aims to tackle these challenges by offering ambitious youth in impoverished communities; outcome-based skills development training that will quickly lead to economic activity, in order to generate an income. GetOn is investing in South African youth by giving them the mentorship, network, life skills, job readiness tools, and maths and English basics, to instil a sense of confidence as they begin their journey to financial freedom and growth.
